Zephrin Hayn, Jedi Knight (Q&A)

The problem with putting up a Q&A is that it means the game is basically over...but what a game! I really enjoyed playing so thanks to the GMs and all the other players for 12 IC days of fun. So many cool characters, some I didn't get to play with but they were all fun to read.

I wanted to try playing a "classic" Jedi and I think it worked out okay. I had never played a Guardian before and Soresu/Protector was very solid. I also wanted more of a challenge so playing a "blind" character meant having to consider my descriptions with a lot more care.

Hopefully the adventures of Zephrin (and Torvin,) will continue, but any questions please feel free to ask away.

I think Zephrin did an excellent job as a classic jedi! A guardian who was never looking to start a fight but would absolutely finish it if people needed to be protected. Being a Miraluka added a cool angle to it as well :D And now he has a padawan and will need to keep refining his wise old master look.

Mechanics wise it seemed very solid, strong parry+reflect with good stimpack usage meant that I was always confident Zephrin could take a hit and then dish one back out!

Will training Torvin be Zephrin's main focus now after the liberation?

How does he feel about the Jedi who have actively sought to join the war?

What was the most important thing (if any) that Torvin learnt during the liberation of Obroa-Skai?

1. Yes! Back to the Temple for remedial training ;) Well, actually so he can heal his mental scars as well and get to make friends with other Jedi. I think there will lots of training montages and plenty of time spent in the stacks looking for more information on the Mandalorians.

2. Zephrin can understand the desire to help but he thinks it presents a serious challenge. War is brutal and can easily lead you down a dark path. He thinks it is ultimately going to cause more problems than it solves. That's one of the reasons he's going back to the Temple.

3. Tough to pick one! There were a few themes. Defeat is never final. There is always hope! Also that you don't have to fight to make a difference, and if you do have to fight that doesn't mean you always have to kill.

Haha, just wanted to jump on and say that I appreciated this, too. As a GM, it's nice to have a PC that you can pour all the hits on and comes out not just alive, but looking cool. Everyone wins!

Zephrin was a very good example of a good Jedi, and I enjoyed writing with him.

So... we know a bit about what's going to happen in the coming years. Where do you see him going with Revan and such?

Thanks 8-)

The damage mitigation coupled with Stimpack Spec makes Soresu/Protector really solid. Faily had mentioned that extra strain is the thing you can never have enough of, so being able to start with decent ST really helped.

Revan... I think Zephrin understands the sentiment, but disagrees with the execution. Hence returning to the Temple rather than pressing on for more battles. Being too close to war for too long is emotionally draining and that's what gets Jedi in trouble. Zephrin's philosophy is to fight only when you have exhausted your other options, Revan is chasing after the fight. Maybe his thoughts will carry a bit more weight with other Jedi now he's a decorated war hero.

I really appreciated having another Miralukan in the game to bounce a bit of those cultural things off of, having that be another Jedi was a bonus for interaction. It was also kind of neat to see the very different directions things went off of that starting point. Thanks for, as always, being awesome to bounce around a scene with.

Zephrin's ability to get all into people's space was certainly something of an inspiration to Tomin...along with landing highly improbably shots during that train heist!

Never got to have a non-combat conversation in character to see what Zephrin thought of a primarily ranged Jedi, so I'll ask here. ^^

What sort of backstory did Zephrin come to the Jedi with? He was obviously among Miralukans enough to pick up those cultural and language bits, and I assume that wasn't from his time in the Temple. But he was quite the professional Jedi, and you'd otherwise have no idea he didn't spring fully-formed from the Temple training ground.

Ah Zephrin. We fought together a lot but I didn't really have the time for much else as far as threads were concerned. Still he seemed to be a great guy and was very handy in a pinch.

He did continue to make me think that guardian are the strongest path of Jedi. But that might be because he could shrug off epic amounts of punishment.

Was the build to your liking? Are you likely to poke guardian some more in the future?

Yeah I would have liked more time for RP but so it goes. The event threads were super fun though!

My first time playing Guardian and the Soresu/Protector combination felt very strong. I liked it enough that I'd like to keep going with Zephrin some more :) I didn't even get to the Improved Talents yet (Parry, Reflect, Bodyguard). I thought I would miss not picking up Circle of Shelter, but I think the strain cost would make it less good than it seems on paper. So still plenty to try out in the two specs he has.

I was expecting to take more crits, and for that to be the glaring weakness, but it all worked well. I also didn't miss having loads of skills (only thing I bought was a rank of Medicine in CC and Lightsaber 2 towards the end).
