An Ice Breaker (Open - 4 players, high-risk combat)

Post by GM Nicha » Thu Mar 09, 2023 7:00 am

This event is open to 4 players.

Image

Location: The beast pens of Nus Gral. A sprawling and filthy warren of metal cages separated by narrow pathways all sitting atop a deep frozen lake. Hundreds of species of animals are kept here and more than one of them lunges at the bars of its cage as you pass. You confront Gral in the blood stained central arena he uses to test his pets.

Because of the overwhelming aura of negative emotions all checks that include a force dice reduce their rolled lightside pips by one, but add one automatic black side pip.

Premise: Incapacitate Beast Master Nus Gral. Players roll cool for initiative.

Opposition: Nus Gral, Duchess, Two squads of three Maalras

PCs start at short range to Duchess, and the Maalras, and medium range to Nus Gral.

Player Notes:

Nus is adversary 3 and defence 2.
Duchess is adversary 1, defence 1
The Maalras are defence 1.

It was hard to say what location Terreck liked more. A collapsing Temple or a smelly arena full of blood and animal feces. He was leaning towards the collapsing temple though. He'd take a rock in the head over a face full of Bantha shit any day.

Taking a deep breath, he adjusted his grip on his carbine and prepared for the upcoming violence. Things would start any moment now.

Something was in the air today. Zeline fidgeted with her carbine's sighting. Though swapping out for more firepower had been appropriate due to Mandalorian propensity for CQB, she still felt discomforted by the change. If this is my greatest worry, then I'm truly living well.

That certainly wasn't the case, though. It'd been too long with her piecing people together instead of dishing out the pain herself. "Always hated this guy," she said through gritted teeth. "All this proves that he needed to go down sooner." It wasn't her place to complain any more, though. Good soldiers followed orders...

Oversized. Well-built. Thick-furred.

Bestial.

Penned.

Those were all words that came to mind when Snowflake saw the beasts caged in Nus Gral's menagerie.

They were also all words Snowflake had heard too often before. Words that hurt. The creatures' growls, howls and shrieks pierced through him deeper than any vibrosteel ever could.

If there could be any doubt, despite the blood stains and the filth, of how the Mandalorian commander treated these creatures, the Gigoran's budding connection the force would quickly dispel it.

Hapunn was in many ways a madman.

Nus Gral was much worse. Cruel. Violent. A slaver.

Something burnt inside the Gigoran. He tried to calm his breath, but it was hard to keep it under control. Something hurt, deep inside.

He could not tolerate that.

Paws clenched, the towering humanoid double-checked the strapping on his shield, stepped ahead, stood even taller. Like an angry wall.

Sirina could hardly pass up the opportunity to pit herself against the beastmaster and his menagerie. Compared with the prior battles with Mandalorian lieutenants, this venture was completely in her wheelhouse, and her calm and alert demeanor puts show to that fact as she keeps herself ready for anything.

Nus is berating his beasts as you approach, a long thin wipe held in one of his hands cracks menacingly against the ice before he finally turns to acknowledge you.

“Hmpph, you kids are the ones who have been causing me all this trouble?” He turns and spits. “You’re just whelps, my boys are useless. It’s why I never rely on soldiers to do a monster’s work.” He cracks the whip again and points at you. “Kill them! And be quick about it!”

The Acklay and packs of Maalras surge forward!

Zeline had been looking forward to this. How would a massive being like Snowflake react to being pumped with performance enhancers?

As it turned out, not at all! There were no side effects at all either. "Hmm, you seem a bit too chill right now," she said, looking at her dosage. More? More?!

"I got the big nasty!" Sirina calls as she flashes a wolfish grin. With a flick of her thumb, she turns her blaster to auto fire and takes a moment to line up a shot as it whirrs to life. A beat later, she launches a barrage of blaster bolts at Duchess, scoring the beast from head to tail as the din of her rifle's report drowns out the various rumblings of Nus's beasts.

Maalras 2 moves to engaged with Zeline and hits her for 7 damage pierce 1. Triumph spend to activate Ensare 2 on Zeline.

When Ensnare is triggered, the target is immobilized for a number of rounds equal to the weapon's Ensnare rating. An Ensnared target may attempt a Hard (3 purple dice) Athletics check as his action on his turn to break free from the effect. (An immobilized target cannot perform maneuvers.)

Nus snears at you all. Pathetic. Haneul and Hapunn had really been taken out by this lot?

"Duchess, stop playing with your food and kill them!" He snaps his whip at the acklay. But the creature still fails to find a target.

"Useless." He raises his long staff and slams it into the ice twisting a control knob, the whole camp feels the vibration of a deep sonic pulse sent into the lake.

“Maalras? Duchess? You really think they’re the biggest beasties around these parts? Let me introduce you to the natural predator of heroes. The FIN FANG FOOM.”
Through the ice, you see movement near the great eye and then rows of teeth.

The thick ice of the lake cracks and then shatters as with a huge tidal wave of freezing water a truly gigantic creature emerges, its head and neck alone towering over you.

Image

New Location Rule: At the moment Nus triggers the Fin Fang Foom and the start of every turn there after, assign each character in the scene (and Nus) to the face of a dice and roll twice. Each character is attacked in melee by as the huge beast bursts through the ice and attempts to chomp on them.

((Sirina's despair means we'll only roll once in this turn, but it will automatically be attacking her!))

Well, that was a giant monster in his face... Which was really not great as far as Fec was concerned. The giant underwater monster bursting forth only made things worse too. One of five stars would not recommend.

Taking a step back he leveled his Blaster at the Acklay and fired. Hopefully it would wound the beast at the very least.

Using the shield to herd the pack of Maalras, Snowflake shifts around to get a good position, then throws himself at the pack with wild, fierce punches, growling at least as much as the pack itself. Ferociousness aside, he does try his best to keep the shield carefully positioned.

Equipment: Wearing vibroknucklers. Snowie will have his newly gained gift (gauntlets) tucked at a pouch in his belt (would need a manoeuvre to ready it). (EDIT: Sap gloves should also be available, as he's go the encumbrance for it!)

Caught off guard by the sudden emergence of Fin, Sirina curses under her breath as she climbs to her feet and quickly jabs herself with a stim. "It's really not that impressive that you collect critters, Nus!" She insists, "maybe if you were half again as smart as your beasts you'd know all it takes is wits and a Blaster to bring down just about anything."

Bringing her blaster rifle to bear once more on Duchess, Sirina lands a precise shot to the Acklay-- striking home at the soft underbelly of the creature beneath its hardened upper carapace.
