EVENT - Hack the Planet (all day, noncombat)

Post by GM Nicha » Sun Feb 19, 2023 3:09 pm

Hack the Planet

Good intelligence saves lives and until now you haven’t had much. But today, as the assault troops were preparing to leave, Nimi casually announced that she’d been able to acquire some Mandalorian codes. Exactly how and why she isn’t willing to say, but they appear genuine and could provide a backdoor into most Crusader communications on the planet. The only catch is the codes change frequently. If you aren’t able to establish a backdoor now then the opportunity is gone forever.

Mayor Evevos has quietly offered to coordinate the effort from her house which has a surprisingly good connection to the planetary grid. Soon the comfortable two story building is packed full of specialists enjoying warm cocoa and homemade snacks while coordinating desperately to bring Mando code.

This All Day Event is open to everyone (a recent change by GMs) , each PC who participates must roll for all steps except part 4.

In this event the PCs will be competing against Mandalorian technicians attempting to secure their transmissions. Characters will be able to take risks for greater rewards while racing against the clock. At the end of the event the GMs will roll to see if the Mando network is permanently compromised using a dice pool generated from the event. Without PC intervention the roll will be ◆◆ against ◆◆◆◆.

Every 5 hack points earned will upgrade the ability of the check by 1.
Every 3 Triumphs will upgrade the ability of the check by 1.
Every 2 Despairs will upgrade the difficulty of the check by 1.

Advantage and Disadvantage are turned into boost and setback for that character’s next roll at a rate of 2 to 1.

Part 1 - We Need to Bypass their GPU with a Bootload

Time is of the essence as technogibberish gets flung backwards and forwards across the house. What everyone can agree on is the connection needs to be opened as wide as possible for the data insertion you’re about to begin.

Technical minded PCs can roll an average computers, or average mechanics with a setback to to throttle the connection to the planetary grid wide open (◆◆ or ◆◆■). PCs can choose to increase the difficulty of these checks to hard, daunting or formidable which will grant an extra bonus success if they pass the check.
(For example, a PC making a daunting mechanics check at ◆◆◆◆■ would generate an extra 2 bonus successes if they passed. This must be noted in your rolls)

Success on the roll and every two further successes adds one hack point.

For those who can’t quite hack it, there’s always plenty of supporting to do. For one, the Mayor’s cocoa is a hit and seems to be providing some much needed stimulants. Instead of rolling to throttle the connections, characters can try to weedle the cocoa recipe out of the mayor so more can be made. This is an average charm or average with a setback deception check (◆◆ or ◆◆■). Success on this roll creates one floating success which does not generate a hack point, but can be retroactively applied to another PC’s roll (this can turn a failed roll into a success).

Part 2 - They’re trying to input pentathwatts into our central processing cortex!

The Mandalorians have noticed you and are none too happy about this intrusion. A counterhack is underway! Defend your cobbled together network less they be the ones walking away with the information.

Every PC who rolled mechanics or computers in part 1 must now roll a hard computers or a hard mechanics with a setback to hastily erect firewalls to keep the Crusaders out (◆◆◆ or ◆◆◆■). For every rank they possess of the ‘defensive slicing’ talent, they made add a boost dice to their dice pool. Failure on this roll removes one hack point from the overall total, with another remove for every 2 further failures.

While it certainly sounds trying, there’s no reason the non tech minded folks can’t rally the hackers. For those not making the computers or mechanics rolls, you can choose to make either a leadership or discipline roll at average with two setbacks (◆◆■■) . Success on this roll creates one floating success which can be retroactively applied to another PC’s roll. (this can turn a failed roll into a success).

Part 3 - They’re using something we’ve never seen before... Hypercode!

Clearly the Crusaders are getting desperate. Which means it's time to strike again before they can secure their communications. What you’ve realized by now is that the code isn’t in galactic basic standard, but instead some strange and convoluted script (Malbolge?). Time to put your heads together and figure it out, but remember the clock is ticking.

Technical minded PCs can roll Knowledge (education) or Knowledge (lore) at hard with a setback dice to represent the time pressure they are under (◆◆◆■). Success on the roll and every two further successes adds one hack point.

Non-technical minded PCs can help directly this time! Huzzah! Characters choose to make either a hard streetwise with a setback or a hard leadership with a setback to quickly see if they can find anyone in the town or the battlegroup familiar with this code (◆◆◆■) . Success on the roll and every two further successes adds one hack point.

Part 4 - Boss Level (Optional)

This is it, the final stretch. Despite your best efforts the Mandalorians are slowly but surely shutting down access points. It’s purely a race now to see whether you can slip in the code before getting booted out.

Technical minded PCs may, if they choose to, make a computers roll at daunting with two difficulty upgrades, or a mechanics roll at daunting with two difficulty upgrades and a setback dice (⬟⬟◆◆ or ⬟⬟◆◆■). Success on the roll and every further success adds one hack point.

PCs not wishing to undertake the computers or mechanics roll can instead roll cool or perception at hard to represent helping everyone stay calm under pressure or spotting enemy mistakes (◆◆◆). Success on this roll creates one floating success which can be retroactively applied to another PC’s roll. (this can turn a failed roll into a success).

While CorSec dealt with a good amount of intelligence, there were clever pockets of organized crime on the planet and that wasn't even accounting for the involvements of some rather shady Hutts, this was not exactly Vala's strength or wheelhouse in the slightest. The chaos of the makeshift 'office', which was likely a collection of terminals and other workspaces where the actual tech experts could do their work was a slight reminder of an overworked precinct office. That didn't help that looking at anything that didn't remotely look like a graphic user interface hurt her head. "Look, I usually just press whatever buttons that do the work, none of this...code and linking stuff. We had a tech department for that or I just ship it over to the cybercrime unit."

She found refuge in the kitchen space and got on the communicator to call the mayor. Of course, it seemed like everyone was trying to contact the mayor at such a time and she was put on hold. On plan B, she tried to get someone from her office, playing communicator tag with a few of them until they spilled the beans on the recipe. It was admittedly the most thrilling game of broken communicator she had played in a while.

"Hey! Have you tried doing that thing you haven't tried yet? How about if you work a bit harder and don't let them get at you? Do the thing but better. I thought you were all tech experts here!" She gave her annoyed support, trying to backseat the defensive coding while trying to keep her advice as universal as possible. That said, it seemed like she had some idea of what she was talking about. Unfortunately, that's the extent of the help she could provide before the frustration was starting to affect her too. "Okay, that's enough for me, I'm taking a hike. Unplugging or whatever you call it."

And she stormed out to get a much-needed breather.

There was a fight with twisted Mandojedi in her future, but first Tomin spends some time soaking up technobabble...and helping with absolutely anything else someone even hints she could do. Begging the mayor for just enough hints to replicate her favorite cocoa for the hardworking nerds?! Absolutely!

Might be the Mayor wasn't too happy that she shared it around though. It got a bit hard to help focus on much for a bit there while dodging Mayor stinkeye through the camp.

In fact, it made her quite eager to go to town and chat up folks who looked like they might have a clue about this weird language they were running into. Armed with a few phrases that she was told genuine masters of this code would understand, like 'beatstick arrays,' 'Oenotheric pointers,' and "buttery endpoints," she found one rambling drunk who had this entire dream about buttery endpoints that she was never repeating, and someone who rang through the Force as a yearning wannabe. He recognized the phrases and gabbled some technothingies back at her, but declined to come back and be anywhere near folks who'd see through his "I read an article once," expertise.

On the other hand, his article-sourced phrases actually stuck in Tomin's head as she spent time watching the patterns of code streaming across screens for a bit (since nobody had the time now to pause and give the volunteers other jobs to do). "Is that what a hyperscore attack looks like?" she asked nobody in particular, only to see several nearby technicians glance at her...back at the screen...and start furiously twiddling with their hackbox controls (Ok, they weren't called hackboxes, but Tomin wasn't paying much attention when anyone did mention what they were.)

Would it be enough? She'd frankly never know unless all the folks glued to screens cheered or groaned in unison.

Or maybe she'd sense it in the Force later, as she dove into more physical fights.

Terreck wasn't much help in these sorts of situations, all this overly stressful tapping at computers. Honestly, he'd probably prefer to be in a firefight. At least then he had an inkling of what he was doing. In these though he just kind of flailed around trying to figure out how me might help, or something he might do to stay out of the way.

Which is for the most part what he did, there wasn't really anything he did that helped much. Though in the end he did manage to point out one piece of code that seemed out of place. He also determined that no one of the ship owned a skateboard, but that was perhaps less then useful information.

Well, Hacking wasn't exactly something Knoght Hayn was an expect, or beginner in. In fact he had never done anything like this before. So it was amazing what you could do with the right amount of kaff!

"I seem to be in their base system..."

"Oh dear, what's that flashing? They are trying to Hack us? Hmm, let's see if they can interpret Miraluka sensory humour..."

"What is this gibberish? Pass me another kaff would you? Why is this cup shaking? Oh it's an unusual translation, just like I did. Clever."

His efforts seemed to pay off. Or the kaff did.

Apollo knew nothing about hacking or slicing. Computers were supposed to serve him, not the other way around!

As he tried to act charming, the scent of hot cocoa completely blocked out his pheromones, causing the recipients to ignore his smiles and, more importantly, his abs! "Hey, hey! Look, we need to stay focused here. Which also means looking in my direction. I will strip if it will motivate you!"

That at least caught some attention, and somehow Apollo taking off his trenchcoat and shirt in a slow and sensual manner seemed to actually help in keeping the attention on him. "... and I say, these Mandalorians may try to take our computers, our digital secrets, but I say it will not be this day! For these brave folks here are stopping them right here, right now! For Obroa-Skai!"

Before he could take off anything more, the mayor had someone come in and remove the Captain from the premises. "No wait, I haven't showed the goods yet!"

At least one person got a flash of the 'goods', feeling sufficiently inspired by the sight.

Direct, unfettered mainframe access has been Rece's dream since day one, when the enlistment terminal made middle name a required field and they wouldn't let him take it apart to fix it. He rips the glove off his cybernetic tool hand and burrows deep into the tangled mess of wires.

First, he splices the power converters directly into the relay matrix to ensure that they're cross-compatible with the red hypernet cables (color-coded to indicate maximum bandwidth, naturally). Network speeds tick up noticeably.

Then, just as the Mandalorian counterhack occurs, he realizes his anti-static strap has come undone. The resulting power surge shoots straight through his hand, sending feedback up his nervous system. Dazed, he struggles to make sense of the Mandalorian code or keep up with the rapidly-closing access points, unless someone can come to his aid.

Hah...king? He was almost sure he'd heard the clansfolk talking about that before. Was it that one time they wanted to know something they said was critical? Or... oh, right, what they said was critical was probably that he kept guard outside, try not to be noticed too much.

Or... maybe it was one of those games they liked playing! He remembered trying to learn that other one. Mah.... jong? Maybe Hah-king was the other one they said they'd teach him at some point!

He didn't quite get why playing a game against the invaders would be so crucial at first, but it made some sense when other of the Hopers explained it would help know where they might attack next. Still a somewhat odd way of getting information, but when he remembered his ritual fight with Krannor... it might make sense!

At any rate, this was important, and he hadn't learnt this game. So trying to find some support for those who did know how to play was probably the best he could do.

Apparently, getting Mayor Evevos to share her recipe was a good way to help the players keep warm and cozy. He wasn't sure how to approach that, but for some reason the mayor found the warm and fluffy Gigoran approachable enough nonetheless, so Snowie quickly found himself part of the effort to make and distribute more hot cocoa around!

As Snowie helped pass the goods around, he noticed those who were playing the game were getting very serious and tense. Apparently the Crusaders were playing using something called Pent - ath - somethings. He tried a few times and never quite got the word right, but with how concerned the Hah-king players were, he knew they needed help. And help he provided! More hot cocoa and a word of encouragement here and there goes a long way - and it worked especially well since he decided to focus only on how they would be able to win if they stood together instead of mentioning anything at all about the game itself!

After a while, some of the players mentioned yet another new strategy the crusaders were using. It was something called... .hyper - cold? But they were used to the cold!

Oh... no, it was a code of some sort! That sounded like a fairly complicated game if it involved codes. And an Ultracode to boot!

He really wanted to help, but he wasn't sure how... Maybe someone in the city knew enough about the game to help, though?

It took him a while, and the player he found kept saying it was a Hypercode, not an Ultracode. Maybe he would understand the difference if he actually learned how to play... but for now, what was important is that he had found someone who could help with their strategy!

After he came back with the reinforcements, the stress the players were facing was almost tangible. He'd seen some of his clansfolk tense with games in the past, especially when they had gone out on a limb and bet a thousand creds too much - but never anything like this.

He thought maybe some more hot cocoa would help keep things calmer, but this time the heat was too high in the game itself, and the mugs he left by some of the players seemed to go forgotten.

"C'mon eggheads," Sirina calls as she wanders around, offering up cocoa. "Dunno what the Mayor put in this stuff but it'll get those geeky brains working overtime-- and seein' as how that's all we can ask of ya." Sirina is shocked when absolutely no one takes her up on the offer, and calls again, "Really?! You won't even take a performance enhancing beverage to be better at the one thing you are good for? Guess being just brains and bone is good enough, hmm? Fine." And storms off.

Only to return as the self-appointed leader of an already perfectly functional pod of hackers. Sirina quickly proves not only a micro-manager, but also woefully inept at understanding the fundamentals of even basic technology. She is, after all, a professional at getting lost in the woods, not tech.

After this further setback, Sirina finally finds her calling. As the de facto head of ne'er-do-wells in Kandra's Run, she thinks back to her more technically minded childhood friends and is able to pick out some not-yet-present who can assist with the hypercode.

Even outside her element, Sirina is a quick study. As the hacking hits a critical phase, she's able to use what she's learned just watching code zip by all day to point to errors, inconsistencies, and flaws. If one were to ask, she'd have no idea what to /do/ with these weakpoints, but she's plenty good at finding them!
